It Rained on Mid-autumn Festival

Zhu Shuzhen

Fallen leaves piled up on the chilly stair;

Motionless cloud dimmed the edge of the sea.

On the high tower my eyes gazed in air;

Dusk fell and banned my mood of writing poetry.

My sorrows lingered ’nd couldn’t be expelled;

Reunion turned not a harmonious tune.

The rain from four-side eaves rapidly fell,

And I sat alone in this empty room.

Collected leaves

Cold, flutter on the steps

Motionless clouds

obscure the sea’s horizon

From above I

strain my eyes to see

The dimness of the sky

cuts off my heartsong

It keeps returning

sadness difficult to forget

A reunion time

not yet agreed

Around the four eaves

flies a driving rain

Inside, still, silent

I sit in this empty study
