Rivers are swelling,
Willows are weeping,
Grass around the secluded village grows, wild and fragrant,
In the sun’s slanting rays apricot blossoms are falling.
In the River’s south departing Spring awakes tearful emotion.
Now duckweed encircles the little islet,
The traveler yet is wandering.

Th’ willows drooping low, the waters of yearning vast,
The village lonely, far and wide the grass extends.
At sunset apricot flowers fall thick and fast.
Spring over in th’ south, my heart grief o’er separation rends.
Duckweed all o’er Tingzhou, would he return ere my bloom spends?

With affection sway and sway the tender willows.
By the lonely village the grasses with the scent of our love extend to the horizon,
In the pale sunlight the apricot blossoms fading like my face here and there fly.
I’m heartbroken in the south of the Yangtze River in the spring late,
Clover fern fills the shoal, but my dear has not been back to my bed.
