In 1963 and 1964, Nelson Mandela and other leaders of the African National Congress were tried for attempting to sabotage the apartheid system in South Africa. Their historical struggle against the legal system in place called worldwide attention to the situation in the country.

This trial, “Criminal Court Case No. 253/1963 (the State vs. Nelson Mandela and Others)”, is recorded in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. It includes a vivid image of the arrest warrant issued for Mandela, and the audio recording of the complete trial. The preservation of these kinds of records, which allow us to engage with the brutality of racism, is a critical part of UNESCO’s mission to promote peace and prevent history from repeating itself.

However, audiovisual materials are also extremely fragile. All too many are lost, due to poor storage practices, natural disasters and even conflict. For this reason, UNESCO works with archivists, librarians and other caretakers who preserve and provide access to this heritage, including through its Memory of the World Programme.

Digitization is offering new ways of safeguarding these materials and making them available to people around the world. UNESCO is leading by example, as part of a two-year project, launched with the generous support of Japan, ending in June 2020. Digitizing Our Shared UNESCO History involves over 15,300 audio recordings, 75 hours of film and video programmes, and 5,000 historical photographs that help to tell the story of the Organization’s actions to foster international cooperation and build peace. The first of these are already available online, and thousands more will be added in the coming months.

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which this year seeks to “Engage with the Past through Sound and Images”, is an occasion to remember the importance of audiovisual materials for connecting with our history and understanding who we are today. The past century was marked by unprecedented human development and world-shaping events. We must ensure its lessons are transmitted to future generations.
