Message by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on International Women’s Day 2020
March 8, 2020
International Women’s Day is a real reason to celebrate. Women and girls having freedom of choice and opportunity, having the same rewards for their hard work and ingenuity as men and boys do. Men are women being on an equal footing. When that happens, everyone is lifted. Countries become more cohesive, respectful, cooperative, peaceful. Economies become more productive and diverse, and prosperity is lifted.
Here in Australia, there’s much progress on all of these scores, keeping with this year’s International Women’s Day theme of “Generation Equality.” Under our Government, we’ve created more than 1.5 million jobs. The majority of those have been taken up by women. Our workforce participation rate for women is now at a record high of 61.5 percent. The gender pay gap is at a record low of 13.9 percent.
As we were reminded so horribly, only a few weeks ago, there is also much more to do though when it comes to keeping women and children safe in our community. We’ve made the largest-ever Commonwealth investment of some $340 million to support the Fourth Action Plan of the National Plan to reduce violence against women and their children between 2010 and 2022. But there’s so much more work to do.
As a government, we will continue to create and prioritise and back pathways towards a safe, secure, fair and equal state for women in our economy and in our society. That’s our pledge. That’s my commitment.
Happy International Women’s Day.
