    Song of Green Door

    隔墙送过秋千影!

    Song of Green Door

    Spring Grief

    Zhang Xian

    Light cold is lingering;

Wind and rain abate in the evening.

    The Mountain Day draws near,

    In my lonely bower

I’m drunk before the faded flowers

    Just as last year.

    Waked up by the horn

    Blowing from city tower,

    I feel forlorn

Within the double door in midnight hour.

How can I bear the bright moon bring

Over the wall the shadow of her swing!

    (许渊冲 译)

    Qingmenyin

    Missing in Spring

    Zhang Xian

’Tis becoming tepid but still remains chilling,

The rain and wind hasn’t stopped until evening,

The yard is still when Soul’s Day is coming.

Facing the falling flowers I drink wine,

Getting drunk as last year, for the beloved I pine.

I’m waken by th’ grief bugle sound from the tower,

The gate’s closed as it’s the night getting later.

Her image in swing is sent by the moon bright

To front of me over the wall, which makes me fret.

    (冯志杰 译)

    Qing Men Yin

    Zhang Xian

    The day is warmer,

    Though yet a little chilly;

    With the eve’s approach,

    Winds and rains subside.

    Now Qingming is around,

    The courtyard looks forlorn.

    Amid dying flowers I drink,

Overdrunk, again I suffer last year’s ail.

When the wind blows into the tower,

    The painted horn awakes.

    When the night is advanced,

    All the doors are quiet.

Yet at this hour of night the swing’s shadow

Strangely flits o’er to this side of the wall,

    Sent by the moonshine.

    (黄宏荃 译)

    Qingmenyin

    Zhang Xian

    Warm yesterday, cold again today,

The wind and rain at dusk die away,

The yard is hushed at the coming Qingming Day.

Drinking, to fallen petals farewell I bid,

And get drunk just as last year I did.

    The wind rocks the bells in the towers;

The whole mansion is quiet in dark hours.

Miserable enough I am, yet casting shadows

Of a swing, doubles my sorrows.

    (陈君朴、冯修文 译)

    Ch’ing men yin

    Chang Hsien

Suddenly nice again after the chill

Wind and rain clearing at last by evening

The garden desolate as Ch’ing-ming nears

And I, drunk, among the battered flowers –

    Same agony as years ago

Roused by the sound of wind through the cornice

At night, when all is still behind the many layered doors

How can I stand it? Bright moonlight

Sends the shadow of her swing over the garden wall

    (Julie Landau 译)

    Ch’ing Men Yin

To the tune-title ‘Song of the Green Gate’

    Chang Hsien

Suddenly it’s warm although the cold is threatening still

And the squally showers only stopped as evening fell.

Silence grips the courtyard now as Ch’ing-ming time approaches.

The flowers are drooping. Deep in wine

I find my last year’s grief is back again.

A bulge wind-borne from the watch-tower wakens me.

Night’s fallen; the many doors stare silently.

How can I bear yet again what the shinning moon will bring

As over the courtyard wall it sends the shadow-shape of a swing!

    (Duncan Mackintosh, Ch’eng His and T’ung Ping-Cheng 译)

    Tune: “Qing Men Yin”

    Night Thought

    Zhang Xian

It is suddenly warm and cold.

Wind and rain do not settle until

    Night starts to unfold.

    So lonesome in the courtyard.

    The Tomb-Sweeping Festival is near.

I become drunk facing the tarnished flowers.

It is the same old illness as last year.

I am awakened by the wind and the sound of a painted horn.

After the doors are closed, it is so quiet at nightfall.

How can I bear to see the bright moon

bringing the shadow of the swing over the wall?
