The October session is halfway full, so please register early to save your seat! Details below! Course Description The aim of the course is to help participants acquire professional editing and revision skills, and an awareness of the norms of clear and concise technical writing. Specifically for translators, this course will help participants turn a draft translation into a smooth, readable, accurate and correct work that is publishable. Chapter 1: Editing and Revising definitions and concepts Chapter 2: The Five Rules of Copyediting house style, spelling, syntax and idiom, punctuation, and usage Chapter 3: Stylistic Editing rationale, foggy vs. plain language, readability scores, fourteen practical guidelines for achieving clarity and concision Chapter 4: Revision Parameters Frequently Asked Questions l Who is this course for? The course is intended for translators, editors and technical writers of English who wish to improve the style, accuracy and overall quality of their final drafts. l How is the course taught? Registered students will receive a username and password to access an online Monterey Institute learning platform called "Moodle". The online material comprises Word and PDF documents with explanations, illustrations, exercises and sample solutions; PowerPoint presentations; Adobe presentations with audio commentary; Captivate training videos. Students will download assignments, and meet weekly deadlines. The Professor will check your exercises, and upload sample solutions for the whole group to compare and contrast against their work. When necessary, the professor will send individualized feedback. l Can I do the work in my own time? Yes. All the material is uploaded on Day 1, so participants can access it and do the work more or less when they like. However, each of the ten units has several exercises which should be completed according to a schedule. l How much time do I need to dedicate to the course? Roughly seven to eight hours of study are required per week. This comprises reading of the course materials, completion of exercises, supplementary reading, and viewing of training videos and presentations. l Do I need to be connected at specific times? No. There will be regularly scheduled office hours and chat sessions, when students and teacher meet and work at the same time, but these are optional. l What level of English do I need? The course is suitable for native writers of English. It is also open to translators and editors whose native language is not English, but with a good level of English grammar. Exercises will be in English. About the Professor: KEVIN COSTELLO Professor Costello teaches and coordinates the Online Certificate in Editing Technical English at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) in Tarragona, Spain. Also at the URV, he was coordinator of a Masters in Translation and Localization, specializing in the teaching of Editing and Revising for Translators. In addition to his work at URV, Professor Costello teaches Spanish and Spanish-English Translation at James Madison University, USA.
