Message from Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

25 March 2013

2013325

This International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is an opportunity to renew our commitment to remember and understand the heritage of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery. The theme of the 2013 International Day – “Forever Free: Celebrating Emancipation” – pays tribute to the struggle for emancipation of enslaved peoples across the world, including in the United States, celebrating this year its 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.

For UNESCO, remembrance is a key part of the fight against racism, and it is essential for deepening respect for human rights and dignity. Remembering and transmitting the history of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery helps strengthen the foundations for peace within societies and between them. Working through a range of cultural and educational programmes, UNESCO safeguards and promotes this heritage as a bridge for dialogue and understanding. We underline both the wealth of the cultural traditions of African peoples throughout this tragic period of history and the importance of the legacy of slavery to contemporary societies --through the arts, cultural heritage, and the wisdom of resilience. We take this forward through teacher training and research as well as through intercultural dialogue and safeguarding cultural heritage. The UNESCO Slave Route Project is designed to foster respect and counter all prejudices and forms of discrimination. All of this in line with the Decade for People of African Descent (2013-2022), proclaimed by the United Nations in 2012.

This International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a moment for all to mobilize in the fight against the racial prejudices and social exclusion inherited from this history. We must raise awareness in every society and with all women and men about the importance of this common heritage. All must recognize the significant contributions made by enslaved peoples to shaping the societies we live in today, in all their rich diversity.

To help disseminate this message, I have designated Marcus Miller as a UNESCO Artist for Peace. An outstanding ambassador for creativity and freedom, resistance and resilience, Marcus Miller will help promote the UNESCO Slave Route Project and underpin all our efforts to build peace through dialogue, respect and solidarity – drawing on the great, generous spirit of jazz and music.

On this day, I invite all Governments, civil society organizations and public and private partners to redouble efforts to support remembrance of the history and heritage we have in common. This must be a source of respect and strength today.
