尊敬的埃默森部长，

尊敬的斯科特副议长、乔格尼斯副议长，

尊敬的反对党领袖代表汉弗莱斯议员，

各位来宾，女士们、先生们：

Ladies and Gentlemen,

玉龙飞天辞旧岁，金蛇狂舞迎新春。我代表中国驻澳大利亚使馆欢迎各界朋友出席第三届“中国日”活动，并送上中国传统节日春节的美好祝福。

Welcome to the third “Day of China”.

As we farewell the Year of the Dragon, we usher in the Year of the Snake.

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Australia, I wish to extend to friends from all sectors warm festive greetings for the Chinese New Year.

2012年中国喜事多多。我们成功举行了中国共产党第十八次全国代表大会，中国向世界庄严承诺，将坚持改革开放与和平发展。中国经济保持了7.8%的高增长，人民生活持续改善；神舟九号成功实现太空对接，蛟龙号载人潜水器潜入7000米深海。中国外交为维护世界和平、促进共同发展发挥着日益重要的建设性作用。中国人民正在实现伟大复兴的“中国梦”。

China had many things to celebrate in 2012.

The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was successfully held with a solemn commitment to reform, opening-up and peaceful development.

China’s economy maintained a high growth rate of 7.8%, and the Chinese people’s living standards further enhanced.

Spacecraft Shenzhou-9 successfully docked with the space lab, and the manned submersible Jiaolong dived to 7,000 meters in the deep sea.

China’s diplomacy played a more constructive role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development of all countries.

The Chinese people are striving to realize their “Chinese dream” of great rejuvenation.

2012年中澳关系亮点纷呈。两国隆重庆祝建交40周年。刘延东国务委员成功访澳，并出席吉拉德总理主持的建交庆祝晚宴。中澳双边贸易额创记录地实现1223亿美元，两国文化年圆满落幕，两国互访人数超过137万。两国经济从未如此紧密，人民交往从未如此相亲，我们对中澳关系也从未如此充满期待。

China-Australia relations also had many highlights in 2012.

Our two countries marked the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations with a series of events.

State Councillor Liu Yandong paid a successful visit to Australia and attended the gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in celebration of the 40th anniversary.

Bilateral trade reached a new record high of 122.3 billion US dollars.

The reciprocal “year of culture” program was successfully concluded.

And mutual visits between our two countries exceeded 1.37 million.

Our economic links and people-to-people exchanges have reached a level we have never seen before.

And we have more expectations for China-Australia relations than ever.

“问渠那得清如许，为有源头活水来。”中澳关系发展根在人民，源在交流。中澳远隔万里，国情、制度、文化传统不同。然而，当我们在悉尼、墨尔本街头看到越来越多的中国游客时，当我们听到越来越多的澳大利亚人操着流利的中文时，当我们看到两百年来在此繁衍发展的华人华侨在澳经济社会中发挥日益重要作用时，当我们发现远在北京的亲朋好友每天关注澳大利亚股市和铁矿石价格时，当我们看到中国游泳选手孙杨在伦敦奥运会夺冠后与澳籍教练丹尼斯热情拥抱和李娜在澳网再获佳绩时，我们就能深刻理解，中澳关系何以能超越地理、国情和文化的差异，发展到今天如此紧密。因为了解，所以懂得；因为懂得，所以亲近。这就是人文交流给中澳关系发展注入的源源活力。

An ancient Chinese poet wrote, “Why is the water so clear in the dyke? Because fresh water keeps flowing from the springhead.” The springhead for the growth of China-Australia relations lies in the people and the people-to-people exchanges.

Separated by a long distance, China and Australia have different national conditions, systems and cultural traditions.

Yet when we see more Chinese tourists in Sydney and Melbourne and hear more Australians speak fluent Chinese, when we see the Chinese communities who have grown and prospered in this country for 200 years play an increasingly important role in Australia’s economic and social development and learn that our relatives and friends in Beijing follow Australia’s stock market and iron ore prices every day, and when we saw Chinese swimmer Sun Yang warmly embrace his Australian coach Denis after winning the Olympic gold in London and our tennis player Li Na again reached the final of the Australia Open, we fully understand why China-Australia relations have been able to transcend differences in geographic location, national conditions and cultures and come a long way to where we are today.

我们已经做得很好，但远未完美。我们要鼓励更多的相互旅游、投资、学习、交流。中国将在悉尼筹建首个中国文化中心，并将继续举办更多“文化年”、“中国日”这样的人文活动。今天，我们邀请到中国河南省200多名小学生到使馆表演，他们充满童真的心灵或许已经续写出属于自己的澳大利亚故事。今天大使馆和澳中友协的朋友们现场为中国希望工程义卖，中国偏远山区的孩子可能因此得以走进学堂。我要代孩子们向使馆同事、澳中友协和华人社团的朋友们致以衷心的感谢和敬意。孩子代表了两国关系的未来，也正是这些中国和澳大利亚故事，架起了两国人民友谊的心灵之桥。

When we know each other well, we understand each other.

When we understand each other, we feel close to each other.

That is the inexhaustible vitality the people-to-people engagement has injected into China-Australia relations.

We have done a good job, but we are far from perfect.

We need to encourage more mutual tourist visits, mutual investment, mutual-learning and exchanges.

China is preparing to open in Sydney its first Chinese cultural centre in Australia, and will organize more cultural events like the “year of culture” and “Day of China”.

Today, we have with us over 200 pupils from the pupils’ art troupe of Henan Province to give us performances.

Maybe in their young innocent hearts, their stories of Australia are already taking shape.

My Embassy staff and friends from the Australia China Friendship Society ACT Branch are holding a charity sale today to raise fund for the Project Hope.

Children in outlying China may be able to attend school because of their effort.

I wish to thank them and Chinese communities in Australia on behalf of the children.

For children are the future of our relations.

It is these stories about China and Australia that have built a heart-to-heart bridge of friendship between our peoples.

2013年是中澳关系新40年征程的开始。不久前发表的《亚洲世纪中的澳大利亚白皮书》，表现出澳方对发展对华关系的战略眼光和期待。让我们携手推进人民交流，谱写未来40年中澳关系的友好篇章。

The year 2013 kicks off another 40 years in China-Australia relations.

The Australia in the Asian Century White Paper released not long ago demonstrates Australia’s strategic perspective and expectations for China relations.

Let us work hand-in-hand to promote people-to-people exchanges and write a new chapter of China-Australia friendship in the next 40 years.
