Ambassador Wu Hailong on the 2012 Open House Day of the Chinese Mission to the EU Good afternoon and welcome to the Chinese Mission to participate in our annual Open House Day event. As we know, people here in Europe have the habit of drinking afternoon tea. For this year’s Open House, we want to do a theme on the Chinese tea culture, so we have invited everyone to come at this hour. I hope that this arrangement will give all of you a relaxing and fun afternoon. Apart from the black tea, which I believe that everyone are familiar with, my colleagues have also picked some very traditional and famous Chinese tea leaves. In a moment, they will explain these different kinds of teas through a presentation. They will also give a demo on how to drink tea in a proper and traditional Chinese way. We hope that this experience will give you more knowledge and make you more interested in the Chinese tea culture. In addition, if you know this already, the traditional Chinese Festival—the Dragon Boat Festival, is drawing near. One unique food we have for this festival is called “Zong Zi”, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in long leaves. I would leave the story of the Dragon Boat Festival to my colleagues, but I do wish to tell you that today we have prepared some Zong Zi for our guests. I invite all of you to have a try and have a share of the festive spirit. With almost half of the year having passed, I strongly feel that 2012 has been a very extraordinary year for China, Europe and China-EU relations. China has maintained steady economic and social development and has continued to step up in shifting the pattern of economic growth. The EU has moved on with active efforts to address the sovereign debt crisis, sparing no efforts to facilitate further European integration. China-EU relations, against such a backdrop, have maintained sound momentum of growth. The last six months are full of big events as evidenced by frequent high level visits in China-EU relations. At the beginning of the year, we have opened our second thematic year—the EU-China Year of Intercultural Dialogue. After that, the Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and the Vice Premier Li Keqiang paid respective visits to the EU in Brussels. China and the EU have launched the High Level People-to-People Dialogue. A new stage has been set for our practical cooperation in urbanization and energy. Last month, the two sides have held the third High-Level Political Party Forum, the 31st round of Human Rights Dialogue and the 26th Session of the Trade and Economic Joint Committee. These events are essential in promoting understanding, strengthening agreement, and facilitating cooperation. Next month, we will hold in Beijing the third High Level Strategic Dialogue. Also in the second half of the year, there will be China-EU High Level Economic and Trade Dialogue and the China-EU Summit. These frequent high level exchanges are a testimony to our profound understanding of the significance and the urgency to strengthen and deepen our comprehensive strategic partnership against the current situation. There is no doubt that in order to keep sustainable, stable and healthy growth of China-EU relations, we must do more than just strengthening high-level exchanges. We must encourage our two peoples to engage each other, and we must tap into the knowledge, ideas, and vision of our intellectual community. I’m very encouraged by the diversity of our participants today. Some of you are academic experts in the top of your field. Some of you are promising young people full of passion and ideas. And all of you share the same interest in China-EU relations. It is my hope that through this opportunity of exchange with our diplomats and the many younger Chinese people, you will come to know more about China, its culture and its development. I strongly believe that you will have a lot to talk about over the tea this afternoon. Let’s hope that these exchanges could lend new ideas and smart proposals to further grow our partnership. In the end, let me wish everyone a pleasant and memorable afternoon. |
