The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is an occasion to salute the 120,000 peacekeepers serving in 17 missions in some of the world’s most volatile and dangerous environments.

　　值此联合国维持和平人员国际日，我们向12万维持和平人员致敬。他们服务于17个特派团，身处世界上一些最动荡、最危险环境之中。

This Day is also a time to mourn fallen peacekeepers. In 2011, 112 men and women died devoting their lives to peace. In the first four months of this year, another 27 peacekeepers have died while serving the United Nations.

　　这一国际日也是缅怀以身殉职的维持和平人员的时候。2011年，有112名男女维持和平人员为和平事业捐躯。今年头四个月，又有27名维持和平人员在为联合国工作时献出生命。

Today we honour the memory of the more than 2,900 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty over the years, and we pledge to carry on their work to bring stability to war-ravaged countries.

　　今天，我们纪念历年来牺牲的2 900多名维持和平人员，我们誓言继承他们的工作，将稳定带给饱受战争摧残的国家。

The fallen peacekeepers came from many different troop-contributing countries, a poignant reminder of the global partnership that underpins United Nations peacekeeping.

　　以身殉职的维持和平人员来自许多不同的部队派遣国，这令人沉痛地提醒我们：联合国维持和平行动得到全球伙伴关系的支持。

Currently, 116 Member States contribute military and police personnel to our operations. This impressive number reflects growing global confidence in the value of United Nations peacekeeping as a tool for collective security. Our new observer mission in Syria is the latest example that demonstrates how the international community looks to the United Nations for solutions to emerging challenges. The Mission is facing difficult challenges but serves bravely to help keep the parties, starting with the Government of Syria, to their commitments to cease the violence that has killed thousands of people. It is part of the larger UN efforts led by the Joint Special Envoy to end the violence and seek a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

　　目前，有116个会员国为我们的行动派遣军事人员和警务人员。这一了不起的数字表明世界各国对联合国维持和平作为集体安全工具的价值信心日增。我们在叙利亚新设的观察团是展现国际社会如何期待联合国应对新挑战的最新例子。观察团面对艰难挑战，英勇地履行职责，从叙利亚政府开始，帮助各方恪守承诺，停止这场已使数千人丧生的暴力对抗。该观察团的工作是由联合特使领导在联合国范围内更广泛的努力的组成部分，目的是终止暴力，寻求政治解决叙利亚危机的办法。

The ultimate goal of any UN peacekeeping mission is to no longer be necessary. Until we reach that objective, we make every effort for peacekeeping to be as effective and efficient as possible.

I am deeply grateful for every contribution of troops and police, as well as for the financial and material resources that make peacekeeping possible. I also thank all countries that provide political support and leadership. Members of the Security Council, in particular, guide and strengthen our work by establishing mandates and updating our deployments to respond to changing conditions on the ground.

Regional organizations play an increasingly important role. The African Union and the United Nations, for example, are working closely together in Darfur and Somalia while jointly addressing the threat posed by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army. These partnerships help give UN peacekeeping the flexibility it needs to address today’s wide-ranging challenges to international peace and security.

　　区域组织发挥的作用日益重要。例如，非洲联盟和联合国在达尔富尔和索马里密切合作，同时共同应对反叛的上帝抵抗军带来的威胁。这些伙伴关系有助于联合国维持和平工作能以必要的灵活性来应对当今国际和平与安全面临的种种挑战。

On this International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, let us remember the sacrifice of those who have served, and let us pledge to strengthen the global partnerships that make our blue helmets a beacon of hope to millions of people around the world.
