尊敬的萨多夫尼奇校长，

尊敬的梅利尼科夫第一副主席，

老师们、同学们：

　　很高兴又一次来到莫斯科大学，在这庄严肃穆的礼堂与老师、同学们见面。20多年前我曾访问过莫斯科大学，此时此刻有故地重来之感。那次访问中，我和贵校的负责人、师生专门讨论了中俄互派留学生的问题。20多年过去了，事遂人愿，莫斯科大学为中国培养了一大批留学生，目前就有1500名中国留学生在这里学习。在此，我谨向莫大的老师、同学们表示衷心感谢，感谢你们对中国学子给予的帮助！

It gives me great pleasure to return to Moscow State University (MSU) and meet with you in this august auditorium. My first visit to MSU was some 20 years ago, so I am delighted to be back. During my last visit, I discussed the exchange of students between China and Russia with the university management, faculty members and students. Twenty years on, it has become a reality and many Chinese students have studied at MSU, including 1,500 who are studying here right now. On this occasion, I would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to all of you for the help you have given to Chinese students.

　　大学是人才的熔炉、思想的宝库、科学的殿堂。莫斯科大学“祖国、科学、荣誉”的校训，给人深刻印象和丰富遐想。站在这里，我也不禁想起莫大创始人、俄罗斯科学之父罗蒙诺索夫。他发明了彩色玻璃烧制技术，并作诗赞美中国精美的瓷器及其烧制工艺。这从一个侧面反映了科学与文学、俄罗斯艺术与中国工艺、西方文明和东方文明的内在联系。长期以来，莫斯科大学以厚重精深的底蕴，孕育了许多栋梁巨匠，培养了众多优秀人才，也为中俄关系发展作出了重要而特殊的贡献。前天我到莫斯科，参加的第一场活动就是会见中俄友好代表人士，其中就有两位莫斯科大学的教授。当时我说，你们身后有成千上万、成万上亿中俄友好参与、支持、推动者汇成的大军。今天，我在这里看到如此之多热衷于中俄友好的人士，更加感受到中俄友好的根基在人民之中、在青年学生之中。

Universities are a melting-place of talents, a treasure-house of ideas and a sanctuary of science. The motto of MSU, “Motherland, Science, Honor” leaves a deep impression and gives people food for thought. Standing here, I cannot but think of Mr. Mikhail Lomonosov, the father of science in Russia as well as founder of MSU. The inventor of the techniques of producing stained glass, he once wrote a poem praising the exquisite Chinese porcelain and its production techniques. This, in a way, reflects the nexus between science and literature, between Russian and Chinese craftsmanship and between Western and Eastern civilizations. Thanks to its profound intellectual tradition, MSU has produced numerous masters and top-notch talents, and made special contributions to the development of China-Russia relations. I arrived in Moscow the day before yesterday. The first thing I did was to meet with personages representing those committed to China-Russia friendship, two of whom are professors of MSU. I said to them that you represent tens of thousands, even hundreds of millions, of people who have participated in, supported and promoted the cause of Sino-Russian friendship. Today, seeing many of you who are so devoted to our friendship, I am even more convinced that the foundation of China-Russia friendship is rooted in our people, particularly young students.

　　中国和俄罗斯都是文明古国和世界大国，两国人民、两国青年对人类的前途和命运都肩负责任，需要我们用全球视野和战略思维，深入认识国际关系中的中俄关系。

China and Russia are both major countries that boast ancient civilizations. The people of our two countries, young people in particular, shoulder responsibilities for the future and destiny of human kind. Therefore, there is the need to gain deep understanding of China-Russia relationship in the context of international relations with a global and strategic perspective.

　　当今世界正处在大发展大调整大变革之中，和平、发展、合作是时代潮流，同时国际金融危机的影响尚未消除，全球性挑战日益增多。这其中，有两个趋势日益明显。

The world today is undergoing major development, adjustment and change. Peace, development and cooperation remain the call of the time. The residual impact of the international financial crisis is still with us. At the same time, there are more global challenges. Two trends, in particular, require more attention.

　　一是，全球化与多极化并行发展。当前，经济全球化、区域一体化深入推进，生产要素在全球范围内优化配置，信息网络无处不在，人类从来未像今天这样联系紧密，世界更加扁平化，成为相互依存的“地球村”。同时，世界多极化越来越清晰，各种力量加快分化组合又相互平衡，发达国家转型与新兴经济体崛起同步进行，任何一种力量都不可能自己左右整个世界局势的变化。

First, globalization and the trend towards a multi-polar world are progressing in parallel. Economic globalization and regional integration are pressing ahead, factors of production are allocated on a global scale for optimal effect, and information networks reach virtually every corner of the world and connect human beings more closely than before. The world has become “flatter” and turned into a global village whose residents are dependent on one another. On the other hand, the trend towards a multi-polar world is increasingly clear. Different forces are forming new balance of power. While developed countries are going through transformation, emerging economies are rising. As a result, no force can shape the evolution of world affairs on its own.

　　二是，共同性与多样性相伴而生。发展经济、改善民生、促进社会公平正义，已成为各国人民的普遍追求。这是世界发展的共同性，反映了人类进步的趋势。另一方面，正像一束阳光有着七种色彩，世界又是异彩纷呈的，文明具有多样性，多元文化能够并存，各国可以从自己国情出发选择正确的、符合人民利益的发展道路。

Second, commonality exists alongside diversity. To develop the economy, improve people’s wellbeing and promote social equity and justice has become the shared aspiration of people around the world. This represents the common characteristic of world development and the trend of human progress. On the other hand, just like a ray of sunshine has seven colors, the world is a diverse and colorful place where different civilizations and cultures can live side by side and each country should be able to choose the right path of development that serves the interests of their people in light of their respective national conditions.

　　人们从上述趋势中认识到，这是一个开放、多元、共生的世界，既有共性又有特性，既应相互借鉴又应彼此包容。这个世界需要和平、需要合作，使人们在共同发展中追求幸福生活。这个世界需要尊重、需要平等，在保障各国自身应有权利的同时，促进国际关系民主化，构建更加公正合理的国际政治经济新秩序。

People can see from this that the world is an open, diverse and symbiotic place. While every country is unique, we all have something in common and thus should accommodate and learn from each other. The world needs peace and cooperation for people to pursue happiness in the course of common development. The world also calls for mutual respect and equality so that while each country’s rights are guaranteed, international relations can become more democratic and a more just and reasonable international political and economic order can be established.

　　中国和俄罗斯有着广泛的共同利益。顺应世界大势，发展中俄关系，推动建设持久和平、共同繁荣的和谐世界，是我们共同的历史责任。

China and Russia share a wide range of common interests. It is our common historical responsibility to follow the trend of the world, grow bilateral relations and push for a harmonious world of durable peace and common prosperity.
