October 26, 2010 New Delhi<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Mr. Ashok Vajpeyi, Chairman of Lalit Kala Academi Mr. Ajit Gupte, Deputy Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations Mr. Lu Jun, Director General of the Center of International Cultural Exchange, Chinese Ministry of Culture Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to inaugurate the exhibition of Chinese porcelain entitled the Miraculous Lotus, from the city Jingdezhen, an ancient and world renowned porcelain production center in China. As part of the on-going Festival of China, this exhibition celebrates a time-honored tradition with a universal appeal. Since the 5th century, Jingdezhen porcelain has become the most prestigious and best known Chinese porcelain in the world. Through the ages, Jingdezhen porcelain has spread far and wide with collections found in all major museums around the world. Jingdezhen porcelain has played a prominent role in cultural exchange between East and West, and between China and India. This collection is especially focused on the lotus and Buddhist motifs in order to showcase the cultural affinity between China and India. As the late Chinese scholar and master of Sanskrit Mr. Ji Xianlin used to say, good-neighborly relations between China and India are "god-given". There is much in common between the people of China and India who share the profound spirit of Oriental cultures. Today, the artists in Jingdezhen are innovative. These exquisite works reflect a combination of classic styles with contemporary expressions, and demonstrate the diversity of modern culture. I hope the visitors will find viewing these fine works a beautiful and enjoyable artistic experience. We are indebted to the Center of International Cultural Exchange, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and to the Jiang Kiln of Jingdezhen, whose efforts made this exhibition possible. Thank you! |
