When Pan Chao¹ left home

how do you think he left?

Our China, now in confusion

is like the approaching night!

Leaving one’s land one thinks

of Chu Yuan²’s hatred of evil

government; of the soldiers of Yueh Fei³

trying to bring peace and order

once again; yet this strength as yet

I do not have; now on the north bank

of the Yellow River, war has flared

communications cut; then once more

down in South China, war again;

army telegrams fly here and there

and since reaction has taken

our land in its grip, bitterness

is too great even for words; each year

as new wars ignite, I think of you

wishing you here.

3. Yueh Fei—a loyal general in the Sung period.
