When black clouds smother the land with darkness,

And long nights make the spring seem far away,

Let not the old year’s misery increase:

So raise your wine-cups and we’ll feast on globefish.

2 

The white-toothed southern maiden sings a ballad

In a late spring silence when the wine is gone.

Then, for no reason, an old dream makes one sober;

Alone and out of the light I think of sorrow.
