Three Generations While making a turn at the crossing, I ran my bike against the right ankle of a male pedestrian. I had been pedaling along when I saw before me a gentleman leading along a toddling boy with one hand and hobbling apoplectic old man with the other. I immediately braked and swerved to one side. The accident could have been avoided but the man took a rapid step forward and knocked against my bike. I hastily dismounted and said uneasily, “Sorry! Very sorry!” It’s not your fault. I myself stepped in your way…” The stranger looked up and explained gently, bent low and rubbing his ankle, “Maybe I was overcautious. I thought your bike would either bump into my son or my father. So without myself knowing it, I dashed over to stop it.” While I had not completely recovered from my fright and was still at a loss what to say or do, the man had already walked slowly away with his old and young charge. I blankly watched them disappearing, deeply touched by the scene of the three receding figures. I was so excited that I wanted very much to put aside my bike and go over to help. But I didn’t. For I know the little boy and the elderly man are like the two loads of a carrying pole weighing down on the shoulder of that middle-aged gentleman. No matter how heavy the burdens may be, neither of them will he put down. |
