天井四四方，

周围是高墙。

清清见卵石，

小鱼囿中央。

只喝井里水，

永远养不长。

A Chant of Heaven Well 

Autumn 1906

The heaven well is square,

By high walls it’s surrounded.

The pebbles are seen clearly,

And the little fishes in the center

They will never be grown up,

Drinking only in the well the water.
