Well! … my education is at last finished: indeed it would be strange, if, after five years’ hard application, anything were left incomplete. Happily that is all over now: and I have nothing to do, but to exercise my various accomplishments.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Let me see!—as to French, I am mistress of that, and speak it, if possible, with more fluency than English. Italian I can read with ease, and pronounce very well: as well, at least and better, than any of my friends; and that is all one need wish for in Italian. Music I have learned till I am perfectly sick of it. But, now that we have a grand piano, it will be delightful to play when we have company. I must still continue to practice a little; --the only thing, I think, that I need now to improve myself in. And then there are my Italian songs! which everybody allows I sing with taste, and as it is what so few people can pretend to, I am particularly glad that I can.

My drawings are universally admired; especially the shells and flowers; which are beautiful, certainly; besides this, I have a decided taste in all kinds of fancy ornaments.

And then my dancing and waltzing! in which our master himself owned that he could take me no farther!—just the figure for it certainly; it would be unpardonable if I did not excel.

As to common things, geography, and history, and poetry, and philosophy, thanks my stars, I have got through them all! so that I may consider myself not only perfectly accomplished, but also thoroughly well-informed.

Well, to be sure, how much have I fagged through—; the only wonder is that one head can contain it all.

一个年轻女士的教育

啊！……我的教育终于完成了：假如经过五年的勤奋学习，还有未学完的课程，那就真的奇怪了。幸运的是，所有的课程都结业了；除了练习已学完的各个科目，我没有要做的事情。

让我看看！——关于法语，我已经很熟练地掌握了，我讲法语可能比英语还流利。意大利语，我读起来很容易，而且发音很好：比我的任何朋友的发音都好，至少和他们一样好：一个人学习意大利语所希望的莫过于此。音乐么，我一直学到腻烦了为止。可是，我们现在既然有了一架三角钢琴，当我们几个人在一起的时候弹一弹那是很惬意的事情。我必须继续练习练习——我想，这是我现在唯一需要提高的科目。然后就是我唱的意大利歌曲！大家都承认我唱得有味道，而且，因为很少有人能自称做到这点，让我感到特别高兴的是，我能。

我的绘画受到普遍赞赏；特别是贝壳和花卉，当然都画得很漂亮；此外，我对各种精巧的装饰品都表现出明显的品味。

然后是我的舞蹈和华尔兹！在这方面，我们的老师自己也承认，他教不了我！当然，我就是跳舞蹈的身材；假如我不能做得出类拔萃，那倒是不可原谅的。

至于普通科目，地理呀、历史呀、诗歌呀、哲学呀，庆幸我的好运气，我都通过了！因此，我不妨把自己看作很有造诣，而且知识面很宽。

啊，诚然，我已经付出很多辛苦；唯一让人感到惊奇的是，一个人的脑袋竟然能把这些东西都能盛进去。
