Guan He Ling

Zhou Bangyan

Overcast is the autumn sky,

Sunlight shining through from time to time,

While evening draws near –

This brings a courtyard steeped in chilling sadness.

I stand listening to the voices of autumn coolness.

The clouds are thick

And no swan goose is seen in the sky.

The hours late,

The guests gone,

Leaving a blank stillness to me alone.

A single lamp shines – on empty walls.

My drunkenness is now gone.

How am I to while away the long night?

(龚景浩 译)

Guanheling · Loneliness During Wandering

Zhou Bangyan

’tis dusk while it turns sunny from cloudy,

And it’s cheerless and lonely in the courtyard,

Standing to hear the whine of autumn chilly,

I can’t see any swan ’neath a floating cloud.

’Tis so quiet at the dead night aft my friends depart,

Only my shadow is reflected on the wall by the light.

I have now entirely sobered from drunk,

How can I spend so long a lonely night?

(冯志杰 译)

Tune: Song of Mountain Pass and River

Zhou Bangyan

Autumn’s now cloudy and now fine,

Gradually on the decline.

It turns dreary and chill

In a courtyard still.

I stand to listen to cold breeze;

In thick clouds I see no wild geese.

No one is left deep in the silent night,

But lonely candle sheds on lonely walls its light.

Awake from wine and autumn song,

How can I pass this endless night so long?
