善为士者不武，

善战者不怒，

善胜敌者不与，

善用人者为之下。

是谓不争之德，

是谓用人之力，

是谓配天之极。

Chapter 68

 

A good warrior is not bellicose,

A good fighter does not anger,

A good conqueror does not contest his enemy,

One who is good at using others puts himself below them.

This is called “integrity without competition,”

This is called “using others,”

This is called “parity with heaven,” - the pinnacle of the ancients.

Chapter 68

 

The best athlete

wants his opponent at his best.

The best general

enters the mind of his enemy.

 

The best businessman

serves the communal good.

The best leader

follows the will of the people.

 

All of the embody

the virtue of non-competition.

Not that they don’t love to compete,

but they do it in the spirit of play.

 

In this they are like children

and in harmony with the Tao.

a good fighter is not angry,

a good visitor will not yield,

a good leader will not be humble.

Such is the virtue of non-contention,

the ability of employing men.

Such is the way to match heaven.
