《菜根谭》英译（居安思危、天亦无用）

天之机缄不测，抑而伸，伸而抑，皆是播弄英雄，颠倒豪杰处。君子是逆来顺受，居安思危，天亦无听用其伎俩矣。<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The force that binds the universe is unpredictable. Sometimes it makes man struggle against adversity, and sometimes it grants him favourable circumstances. This shows that Heaven has the faculty of making or breaking heroes and other outstanding men. When a man of noble character meets a temporary setback, he exercises patience. When everything seems to be smooth sailing, he keeps in mind the possible approach of adversity. In this way, even the lord of Heaven cannot manipulate him.

The power of Providence can never be outguessed. It now sets people out of luck and now favors them with good fortune, and then does the same the other way round. However, no matter what it does, it does it purposely to make fools of the so-called heroes who consider themselves no ordinary beings. In light of this, what a true gentleman should learn to do is to resign himself to adversity when out of luck and get prepared for danger in times of peace. That way, even Providence is unable to employ its despotic power against him.
