上尝欲教之吴、孙兵法，对曰：“顾方略何如耳，不至学古兵法。”

上为治第，令视之，对曰：“匈奴不灭，无以家为也。”由此上益爱重之。

How Dare I Make My Home Before Wiping Out the Xiongnu Enemy?

[Huo Qubing was a famous general of the Han Dynasty.] He was a person of few words who did not express his opinions rashly. Still, he was courageous and dared to advance bravely.

Emperor Han Wudi once told him to study the authoritative books on military skills written by Wu Qi and Sun Zi, but Huo said:” Let us make tactical decisions during a campaign according to each situation as it happens. It is unnecessary to act totally under the instructions from ancient books.”

The Emperor had a new house built especially for Huo Qubing, and told him to go and have a look at it. He replied:” How dare I make my home before wiping out the Xiongnu enemy?” From that moment on, the Emperor liked and respected him all the more.
