Disliking Ugly Things

Zhao Jianzi had two aids, one called Yin Chuo and the other, She Jue. One day Zhao Jianzi commented:

“My aid She Jue, who esteems and cherishes me, never talks about my faults in the presence of others. [But I simply can no longer bear the way my other aid, Yin Chuo, treats me.] He doesn’t like me and always criticizes my faults and mistakes in the presence of others.

After hearing it, Yin Chuo went to see Zhao and said:

[“You’re wrong about us.]She Jue never pays attention to your faults and mistakes, but cherishes your virtues together with the ugly side of your moral character. [I often notice your faults and mistakes and ask you to mend your ways and correct your mistakes.] I don’t esteem and cherish what is ugly in you. [What is to be cherished in ugly things?]”
