朱买臣……吴人也。家贫，好读书，不治产业，常艾薪樵，卖以给食。

担束薪，行且诵书。其妻亦负戴相随，数止买臣歌讴道中。买臣愈益疾歌。妻羞之，求去。

Reading Aloud While Carrying Firewood

Zhu Maichen was a native of the Wu County. He was very poor but fond of learning. He did not know about making money. He often went to cut hay and small trees and sold them to keep himself alive.

He walked along carrying a bundle of firewood on each end of his shoulder-pole, and as he walked he read aloud. His wife followed along behind him, carrying firewood on her back. She tried to persuade her husband again and again not to read aloud along the way. But Zhu raised his voice still louder instead. His wife felt ashamed of him, and sued for a divorce.
