The tz’u writers of the T’ang, Five Dynasties, and Northern Sung [showed the influence on their writing of] actors and singing girls, while the writers of the Southern Sung and later reflected the taste of very ordinary people. The defects caused by the two were about equal. However, I would rather see the tz’u of tz’u poets show a defect tending toward the influence of actors and singing girls than toward that of ordinary people because the latter will pall much more quickly than the former.
