Concerning [Chou Pang-yen] tz’u , Ch’en Chen-sun said: ‘He often utilized lines from shih of T’ang poets and beveled them to fit into the patterns with which he was working. Yet the effect achieved was one of complete naturalness.’ Chang Yen said he was skilled in blending lines from shih [into his own]. But this is only part of the picture. How much more discerning was Ch’iang Huan’s comment: ‘In describing the aspects of things he exhausted the intricacies of every detail’.
