明季国初诸老之论词，大似袁简斋之论诗，其失也，纤小而轻薄。竹垞以降之论词者，大似沈归愚，其失也，枯槁而庸陋。

Discussion of tz’u by the old scholars around the end of the Ming and beginning of the present (Ching) dynasty resembled discussion of shih by Yuan Mei. Their fault lay in being too flimsy and flippant. The discussions of tz’u of Chu Yi-tsun and later writers resembled the writings of Shen Te-ch’ien. They all suffered from dryness and banality.
