To conquer the demons, you must first conquer the perversity in your own heart. Once you have done that, the demons will cower and be at your command. To rein in reckless tendencies, you must first control the impulses that lead to such tendencies. Once your heart is tranquil and your life force harmonious, elements from outside will no longer be able to disturb you.

To vanquish monsters, one should first vanquish the wicked thoughts in one’s own heart; only when the wicked thoughts are vanquished could all the monsters be obedient at one’s command. To control external absurdity, one should first have control over the internal rashness of one’s own; only when the internal rashness of one’s own is well under control could the external absurdity not invade.
