《沧浪》、《凤兮》二歌，已开楚辞体格。然《楚词》之最工者，推屈原、宋玉，而后此之王褒、刘向之词不与焉。五古之最工者，实推阮嗣宗、左太冲、郭景纯、陶渊明，而前此曹刘，后此陈子昂、李太白不与焉。词之最工者，实推后主、正中、永叔、少游、美成，而后此南宋诸公不与焉。

The stylistic form of the Ch’u tz’u had already begun to appear in songs such as ‘Ts’ang-lang’ and ‘Feng-hsi’. However, the very best of the Ch’u tz’u is to be found in the poems of Ch’u Yuan and Sung Yu; the later poets who wrote in this style, such as Wang Pao and Liu Hsiang cannot be compared with them. The very best of the poets who wrote in five-word-line ancient-style verse were Juan Chi, Tso Ssu, Kuo P’u, and T’ao Ch’ien. Those who preceded them, such as Ts’ao Chih and Liu Chen, and those who came after, like Ch’en Tzu-ang and Li Po, could not compare with them. The very best of the tz’u writers were Li Yu, Feng Yen-ssu, Ouyang Hsiu, Ch’in Kuan, and Chou Pang-yen. Noen of the Southern Sung writers could compare with them.
