《人间词话》英译（九十）

朱子《清邃阁论诗》谓：“古人诗中有句，今人诗更无句，只是一直说将去。这般诗一日作百首也得。”余谓北宋之词有句，南宋以后便无句。玉田、草窗之词，所谓“一日作百首也得”者也。

Chu His, in his Ch’ing-sui ko lun shih (Discussions on poetry in the Ch’ing-sui ko Pavilion), said: ‘In the shih of the ancients there were many fine lines but in the shih of the present day we no longer find them. They just go on and on in unending monotony, and one can write a hundred of this type of poems in one day.’ It is my opinion that the tz’u of the Northern Sung contain many fine lines but from the Southern Sung on we no longer can find any. For example, the tz’u of Chang Yen and Chou Mi are the so-called one hundred a day variety.
