《人间词话》英译（八十八）

贺黄公谓：“姜论史词，不称其‘软语商量’，而赏其‘柳暗花暝’，固知不免项羽学兵法之恨。”然“柳暗花暝”，自是欧、秦辈等人句法，前后句有画工化工之殊。吾从白石，不能附和黄公矣。

Ho Shang said: ‘When Chiang [K’uei] discussed the tz’u of Shih [Ta-tsu] he did not extol the line, “Now softly twittering, trying to decide”, but rather appreciated the line, “They’ve gazed their fill at willows now shaded, flowers now dark.” From this we can see that he suffered from the same kind of problem that Hsiang Yu encountered in learning the art of warfare.’ However, the latter line fits in with the mode of expression of poets like Ouyang Hsiu and Ch’in Kuan. The difference between the first and second example is the difference between a painter at work and nature at work. I’ll go along with Chiang K’uei’s estimate. I cannot agree with Ho Shang.
