《人间词话》英译（八十一）

谭复堂《箧中词选》谓：“蒋鹿潭《水云楼词》与成容若、项莲生，二百年间，分鼎三足。”然《水云楼词》小令颇有境界，长调惟存气格。《忆云词》精实有余，超逸不足，皆不足与容若比。然视皋文、止庵辈，则倜乎远矣。

T’an Hsien in his anthology entitled Ch’ieh-chung tz’u (5/6b) said: ‘Chiang Ch’un-lin’s Shui-yun lou tz’u along with the tz’u of Na-lan Hsing-te and Hsiang Hung-tso have in the past two hundred years formed the three legs of a tripod. However, while the little songs of Shui-yun lou tz’u to some extent possess ching-chieh, the long songs preserve only a certain vital force and form (ch’i-ko). And while [Hsiang’s] Yi-yun tz’u are abundantly expert and real, they are lacking in that quality which surpasses [the mediocre]. Neither of these men has what is needed to be compared with Na-lan Hsing-te. On the other hand, if we compare them with men such as Chang Hui-yen or Chou Chi they outshine them by far.
