The two characters lü and je [which are ju tones] are used to rhyme with two characters which are ch’ ü tones. In the same way, Han Yü in his [second] tz’u to the tune of ‘Ho hsin lang’ contained in his tz’u collection, Tung-p’u tz’u, used chu 注 [in ch’ü tone] to rhyme with yü 玉 [in ju tone], and ch’ü 曲 [in ju tone] to rhyme with nü 女[in shang tone]. And in his tz’u to the tune of ‘Pu suan tzu’ he sued yeh 夜 [in ch’ü tone] to rhyme with chieh 节 [in ju tone] and yüeh 月 [in ju tone] to rhyme with hsieh 谢 [in ch’ü tone]. These poems foreshadowed the mixed tone rhymes which appeared later in the Northern drama. |
