《人间词话》英译（八十）

稼轩《贺新郎》词：“柳暗凌波路。送春归猛风暴雨，一番新绿。”又《定风波》词：“从此酒酣明月夜。耳热。”“绿”、“热”二字，皆作上去用。与韩玉《东浦词·贺新郎》以“玉”、“曲”叶“注”、“女”，《卜算子》以“夜”、“谢”叶“食”、“月”，已开北曲四声通押之祖。

Hsin Ch’i-chi’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Ho hsin lang’ contains the lines:

Willows dark sweep across the fast flowing waterway (lu 路)

Spring sped on her way by wild wind, fierce rain.

And in that instant a world freshly green (lü 绿)

And his ninth tz’u to the tune of ‘Ting feng po’ contains the lines:

Henceforth let’s make merry with wine the moonlit night (yeh 夜)

Till my ears burn hot (je 热).

The two characters lü and je [which are ju tones] are used to rhyme with two characters which are ch’ ü tones. In the same way, Han Yü in his [second] tz’u to the tune of ‘Ho hsin lang’ contained in his tz’u collection, Tung-p’u tz’u, used chu 注 [in ch’ü tone] to rhyme with yü 玉 [in ju tone], and ch’ü 曲 [in ju tone] to rhyme with nü 女[in shang tone]. And in his tz’u to the tune of ‘Pu suan tzu’ he sued yeh 夜 [in ch’ü tone] to rhyme with chieh 节 [in ju tone] and yüeh 月 [in ju tone] to rhyme with hsieh 谢 [in ch’ü tone]. These poems foreshadowed the mixed tone rhymes which appeared later in the Northern drama.
