长调自以周、柳、苏、辛为最工。美成《浪淘沙慢》二词，精壮顿挫，已开北曲之先声。若屯田之《八声甘州》，东坡之《水调歌头》，则伫兴之作，格高千古，不能以常调论也。

In the long tz’u form Chou Pang-yen, Liu Yung, Su Shih, and Hsin Ch’i-chi were the most skilled. Chou Pang-yen’s two tz’u to the tune of ‘Lang t’ao sha’ are forced with rise and fall of emotional intensity. They are a foretaste of the Northern drama [of the Yuan]. Poems such as Liu Yung’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Pa sheng kan chou’ and Su Shih’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Shui tiao ko t’ou’ are evocative expressions. Their style is loftier than any others through the ages, and they cannot be discussed in terms of ordinary tunes.
