以《长恨歌》之壮采，而所隶之事，只“小玉双成”四字，才有余也。梅村歌行，则非隶不办。白、吴优劣，即于此见。不独作诗为然，填词家亦不可不知也。

It shows an overabundance of genius that the only historical allusions strung together in the whole grandeur and brilliance of Ch’ang hen ko (Song of everlasting sorrow) are Hsiao-yu and Shuang-ch’eng. On the other hand, Wu Wei-yeh could not get along without stringing many allusions together in his songs. The superiority of the one and inferiority of the other is brought out by this point. Not only is this true of shih writers, but tz’u writers too must understand it.
