人能于诗词中不为美刺投赠之篇，不使隶事之句，不用粉饰之字，则于此道已过半矣。

If a man is able in his shih and tz’u not to write verses whose purpose is to praise or blame or to be presented as gifts to friends, if he does not write lines in which historical allusions are strung together (li-shih), or use words that are merely decorative, he will have covered more than half the road [to good poetry].
