大家之作，其言情也必沁人心脾，其写景也必豁人耳目。其词脱口而出，无娇揉妆束之态。以其所见者真，所知者深也。诗词皆然。持此以衡古今之作者，可无大误矣。<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

When great writers express feelings they penetrate to the core of men’s being. When they describe scenery they broaden men’s auditory and visual powers. Their words slip easily forth from their mouths with no hint of forced exertion or working order. This is because their vision is true, their understanding profound. This applies to both shih and tz’u. One cannot go far wrong in measuring the works of all the ages by this standard.
