古今词人格调之高，无如白石。惜不于意境上用力，故觉无言外之味，弦外之响，终不能与于第一流之作者也。

Of all the tz’u writers though the ages none can match Chiang K’uei in form and melody. I only regret that he did not expend more effort on meaning and poetic state (yi-ching 意境). But because of this I feel he lacked the flavor that goes beyond the uttered word (yen-wai chih wei) and the sound that goes beyond the strummed strings (hsien-wai chih hsiang), and in the final analysis he cannot be ranked among writers of the first class.
