《人间词话》英译（三十八）

咏物之词，自以东坡《水龙吟》为最工。邦卿《双双燕》次之。白石《暗香》、《疏影》，格调虽高，然无一语道着，视古人“江边一树垂垂发”等句何如耶？

Of all the tz’u which sing of specific things (yung-wu) I consider Su Shih’ tz’u to the tune of ‘Shui lung yin’ the most skillfully done. Shih Ta-tsu’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Shuang-shuang yen’ is second to it. Although the form and melody (ko-tiao) of Chiang K’uei’s tz’u to the tune of ‘An Hsiang’ and ‘Suying’ are lofty, there is nothing in the direction that really hits the mark. How can they compare with lines such as: ‘By the riverside a single tree on the verge of awakening’?
