《人间词话》英译（三十六）

美成《苏幕遮》词：“叶上初阳乾宿雨。水面轻圆，一一风荷举。”此真能得荷之神理者。觉白石《念奴娇》、《惜红衣》二词犹有隔雾看花之恨。

Lines in Chou Pang-yen’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Su mu che’:

The first rays of the sun dry last night’s rain on the leaves.

Clear and round on the water’s surface,

One by one the lotuses lift their faces to the breeze.

really catch the spirit and principle (shen-li) of the lotus. But I feel that Chiang K’uei’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Nien nu Chiao’ and ‘Hsi hung yi’ are disappointing in that one sees the flowers as through a veil of mist.
