美成深远之致不及欧、秦。唯言情体物，穷极工巧，故不失为一流之作者。但恨创调之才多，创意之才少耳。

Chou Pang-yen could not come up to Ouyang Hsiu and Ch’in Kuan in the achievement of depth and distance in his tz’u. But he was infinitely skilful in his expression of emotions and empathy for things. Thus he can still be ranked among the poets of the first class. However, it is to be regretted that his talents lay more in the composing of tunes than in creative meaning (yi).
