For musical cadence and crisp straightforwardness it had no equal’. Wang Chi wrote in praise of Hsueh Shou’s fu (rhymed prose): ‘The tone and interest (yun-ch’u) are lofty and rare; the diction and meaning are subtle and far-reaching. Its jagged heights, bleak and chill, really cannot be discussed’. It is to be regretted that one seldom meets this kind of imagery in tz’u. only Su Shih in one or two instances achieved anything like the former; only Chiang K’uei in one or two instances the latter. |
