The state of Ch’in Kuan’s tz’u is one of extreme tenderness. Yet when we come to lines such as:

How can I bear it, shut within this lonely inn against the spring cold?

Slanting through the cuckoo’s cries, the sun’s rays at dusk.

it changes to one of poignancy almost too much to bear. Su Shih showed superficial judgment in liking the last two lines of the tz’u so much.
