《人间词话》英译（二十八）

冯梦华《宋六十一家词选·序例》谓：“淮海、小山，古之伤心人也。其淡语皆有味，浅语皆有致。”余谓此唯淮海足以当之。小山矜贵有余，但可方驾子野、方回，末足抗衡淮海也。

Feng Hsu states in the Preface to his Sung liu-shih-yi chia tz’u hsuan (Anthology of tz’u of sixty-one Sung poets):’Huai-hai [Ch’in Kuan] and Hsiao-shao [Yen Chi-tan] were two of the most sensitive of heart in former days. Even their plainest language had flavor, their most superficial expression a certain charm’. But it is my opinion that only Ch’in Kuan fits this description. Yen Chi-tao was too proud of his high birth. It is better to pair him with Chang Hsien and Ho Chu rather than try to make him compete with Ch’in Kuan.
