《人间词话》英译（二十二）

梅圣（原误作“舜”）俞《苏幕遮》词：“落尽梨花春事（当作“又”）了。满地斜（当作“残”）阳，翠色和烟老。”刘融斋谓：少游一生似专学此种。余谓：冯正中《玉楼春》词：“芳菲次第长相续，自是情多无处足。尊前百计得春归，莫为伤春眉黛促。”永叔一生似专学此种。<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Mei Yao-ch’en’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Su mu che’ contains the lines:

Fallen the last petal of those pear blossoms, spring again is dead.

The earth is filled with the sun’s afterglow.

The green-blue hues with the mist grow dim.

Liu Hsi-tsai said it seemed as though Ch’in Kuan spent his life specifically imitating this type of poetry. It is my opinion that the same comment could be made of Ouyang Hsiu with reference to a few lines from Feng Yen-ssu’s tz’u to the tune of ‘Yu lou ch’un’:

The lush fragrance of grass and blossoms will keep on growing, growing,

How natural for feelings to brim over, nowhere fully satisfied.

Over the wine cup I made a hundred plans for spring’s return,
