Chang Hui-yen said Wen T’ing-yun’s tz’u ‘showed depth and at the same time beauty, breadth [of scope] and at the same time restraint’. It is my feeling that only Feng Yen-ssu could fit such a description. Liu Hsi-tsai’s comment that ‘Wen T’ing-yuan surpassed others in fineness’ comes somewhat closer.
