江南江北愁望，相思相忆空吟。

鸳鸯暖卧沙浦，鸂鶒闲飞橘林。

烟里歌声隐隐，渡头月色沈沈。

含情咫尺千里，况听家家远砧。

To My Love across the River

Yu Xuanji

Wistfully I gaze

o’er the river,

north and south;

empty songs of longing

echo memories.

Mandarin ducks laze cozily

by the sandy beach;

water birds wing lazily

through an orange grove.

In the mist

the voice of song

is hidden subtly;

at the ford

the light of the moon

sinks deep into the waves.

I’m full of emotion

so near to you

and yet so far away,

harder to bear

whenever I hear

the distant songs of families

on their laundry day.
