To a Japanese Friend

Don’t tell me women are cowards:

I set sail for Japan, alone!

My inspiration: blue sky, vast sea.

Here, the moon shines on my dream in Japan.

My country is in chains, and my heart weeps,

Desperate, ashamed to be doing nothing.

How can I savor a spring breeze,

Feeling such pain for my family, my people?
