The Prisons Are Full of Convicts

Iron chains and silver cangues: crowds of prisoners.

Distinguished laws and humble proposals are continuously issued.

No more is heard of memorials to empty the prisons;

How ashamed I must feel before the man of “half a word!”

The pure Ying, land of Mr. Huang, is near;

Shao-po of the sweet pear tree is our neighbor.

I long for those sages, but cannot follow their ways;

Are the people responsible for all these punishments?
