蹈海鲁连不帝秦，茫茫烟水着浮身。

国民孤愤英雄泪，洒上鲛绡赠故人。

Presenting Tang Guodun with Poem and Painting on Our Parting

Lu Lian (1) would rather drown himself in a sea than bow to Qin;

I feel like a wretch drifting in boundless misty waters.

Here in paintings I have translated our indignation and tears

And present them to my friend on our parting as keepsakes.

Dragons are fighting on the sea and spilling yellowish black blood;

I sing of the wilderness of our motherland, my hair flowing in wind.

Along the Yi River in a chill wind there goes the man (2);

The sky in a frosty white, lit by a bright moon.

(1) Lu Zhonglian of the state of QI. In 258 B.C. when the capital of Zhao was besieged by Qin troops, Lu advised the ruler of Zhao not to surrender, nor to recognize King Zhao of Qin as emperor. Lu said that if Qin should have the world under its control he would drown himself in the East Sea.

(2) Here the author likens himself to “the man”, namely, the well-known hero Jing Ke.
