有约不来过夜半，

闲敲棋子落灯花。

Zhao Shixu

Yellow plum season, rainfall on house after house,

Green grass and ponds, frogs heard here and there.

Appointment with no show, already midnight past,

Casual drumming of chess pieces, the lamp wicks drop.

The Appointed Hour

Zhao Shixiu

Unceasing falls the rain when plums are growing ripe,

Within their sedgy pools the bullfrogs croak and pipe.

The hour they named has passed, my friends have failed to call,

A careless tap with chessman makes the lamp-wick fall.
